About Everything

Thanks for visiting A Farmish Kind of Life!  As I say on my podcast, I like to talk about “homesteading stuff, and life stuff, and everything in between.”

About Me:

I’m Amy — farm girl, author, podcaster, and porch-talk truth-teller. Equal parts sweet and sass, I’ve been writing about real life and homesteading for over 16 years. Around here, you won’t find perfection or polished advice. What you will find is honesty about the way seasons shift, both on the farm and in life.

About the farm:

We’ve called Clucky Dickens Farm home since 2011. It’s five acres in central Minnesota that’s seen a lot of trial and error. Over the years we’ve raised chickens, ducks, pheasants, turkeys, pigs, goats, horses, and even rabbits. We’ve tended big gardens, punted through starting an orchard, and filled the freezer with our own home raised meat.

But here’s the truth: homesteading isn’t one straight line. It happens in stages. There were years we were all in — raising everything we could, building pens and coops, working ourselves ragged. And there were years we pulled back, realizing we maybe (absolutely) didn’t need to do all the things to live this life well.

We learned that homesteading life really changes when kids grow up and move on. When schedules morph and priorities change. Those big homecooked from-scratch meals? We still love them, but these days it’s sometimes easier to grab a quick PBJ because you’re the only one around.

We’re at a different place in life now, one that often has me wondering what’s the next step? What do we need? What don’t we? Sometimes the answer is a new project; sometimes it’s letting go of one. Life stages are weird, and we’ve walked through plenty… but each one has taught us something about what really matters.

So whether you’re here for the chickens, the pie recipes, or the porch talk about midlife and how things look different now but that’s because they should… welcome. Pull up a chair — I’m glad you’re here.

    • An email newsletter is next on my list to tackle. What kinds of things would you be interested in seeing in a newsletter? Thanks for asking!

  • I’m pinning you to my new blog board so I don’t lose track of you. Anyone who has a pig chasing story is someone I want to visit more often.

    • Aw, thanks! It’s funny how many not-funny-at-the-time-but-totally-hilarious-afterwards stories you get when you are on a farm. 🙂

  • Loving your response to the previous comment! It’s SO true, the stuff that can nearly leave one in tears in-the-moment can border on hysterical after the fact! (From a kindred soul on a small “farm” in Eastern SD)

  • Hi Amy, I am excited to have found your site. I am wondering what you might know about food dehydration and what might be the best one to buy. Thanks in advance.

    • I have a few different dehydrators but do not use them often enough to make a recommendation. Definitely something I should look more into in the coming year, yes? Thanks for the reminder!

  • Amy, Amy, Amy- I am listening to Don’t Be A Slave To The Simple Life right now- awesome podcast!!! Awesome! Simply awesome. Thank you for being you and sharing this with us. Love it.
