It’s already been well established that this farmgirl loves her pizza. Whether I’m using our homemade crust recipe, or going for less carbs using fathead dough, pizza is my thang. But sometimes, a gal also wants soup, so when I’m craving pizza but also want the warmth and comfort and ease of a one pot meal, I make a batch of homemade pizza soup.

The great thing about pizza soup is you can make this as “homemade” as you want it to be? Grow your own peppers and onions? Perfect. Raise your own pigs and make your own italian sausage? Awesome. Canned your own pizza sauce with the tomatoes from last year’s garden? Amazing.

But obviously if you didn’t raise those things yourself, the grocery store can help you out.

Let’s get to this so we can get this pizza soup in your belly.

Ingredients for Pizza Soup

1 pound ground Italian sausage

1/2 cup water

1 onion, chopped

1 green pepper, chopped

2 Tbsp minced garlic

1 tsp salt

Italian seasoning, basil, rosemary, black pepper (to taste)

8 cups pizza sauce

4 cups water

4 ounces pepperoni, chopped

Shredded mozzarella cheese

How to Make Pizza Soup

After browning the sausage in a skillet, add 1/2 water, onions, green peppers and seasonings to the skillet and saute together until tender.

Love the taste of pizza but craving the warmth and one-pot ease of soup? Pizza soup is a great choice to fill your belly!

Put the pizza sauce and 4 cups water in a large pot, then add the sausage mixture as well as the pepperoni.

Bring to a boil, and then let simmer as long as you’d like. Maybe you’re ready to eat now. Or maybe you’re waiting for your significant other to get home. Just let it simmer. It will be there for you when you’re ready.

When you serve the soup, top each bowl with mozzarella cheese. It gets melty and wonderful, just like cheese on a pizza should be.

This soup can of course be modified to fit any of your pizza desires. Drop in some olives or bacon if that’s how you like your pizza. Heck, I wouldn’t even think twice if you told me you added some pineapple.

Pro tip: You can even add noodles to this soup. If you add a lot of noodles, it becomes a casserole. Or hotdish, as we say where I come from.

However you choose to make it, pizza soup is great served with twisty homemade bread sticks or a hunk of One Rise Baguette. You could even go a little nutty and try it in a small homemade bread bowl, which I suppose is really like wrapping your pizza soup in a sort of crust.
