There is a certain allure, I suppose, to living like the Amish or stepping back in time to a world without modern conveniences. I’ve been reading two books lately about two couples who did this very thing for a whole year. But while these books offer fascinating insights, not everyone can—or wants to—take such drastic steps. Today I’m pondering how those of us still in the modern world can integrate technology (specifically our phones, the internet, and social media) into our lives without letting it take over. (Main topic starts at time stamp 4:52)
Also hear updates from the lifestead such as:
- 24 years of marriage!
- A giant delivery for the outdoor wood boiler
- Fall is here and the garden is finishing up
- Soup series is still going strong
I’m very honest in this episode about my own challenges with setting boundaries regarding my smart phone, the internet, and social media, especially when it’s an integral part of my work with A Farmish Kind of Life. It can be tricky to manage an online presence while maintaining a sense of control over your digital life… but that’s exactly what we need to do.
This episode of the Farmish Kind of Life podcast is really a call to action for all of us to evaluate our relationship with our phones, the internet, and social media. It should all be a tool rather than a tether, and we need to be intentional about how we use it.
Are we honest enough to admit when our phones, the internet, and social media have become a problem? Can we find a middle ground that sees us using all of it without letting it take over our lives?

Just…wow. I really needed this podcast today. I was shaking my head yes more than I care to admit. 🙈 This REALLY got my attention! I certainly identify with the WHOLE thing! Thank you so much for your honesty, Amy. I didn’t feel judged or put off or like “well here’s yet ANOTHER trend!” You spoke in a way of as “hey, y’all, I’m in the same boat so let’s work together and see what we can do to fix this!”
